Yes! Her Story
Initiated by Image Rwanda, HerStory is a project that seeks to use art to empower young women in 30 districts of Rwanda, who have dropped out of school, to be storytellers who can express their thoughts and aspirations, give a voice to other women in their communities, and turn art into a living.
After the end of the workshops, alumni are boarded onto Image Rwanda’s contributors community, where they are allocated assignments from its already existing network of clients and partners.
Currently we concluded Cohort 1 in Burera District in Partnership with University of Global Health Equity, check the Newsletter Here.

These criteria are mainly focused on vulnerability, unlikeness to go back to school and willingness to on-board the program.
Workshop
Beneficiaries have to complete a 3-week workshop, including daily theoretical and practical sessions. These workshops are carried out by professional Artists from Image Rwanda community, and majority of trainers are female creatives.
Every trainee is assigned a creative mentor to guide them through the workshop phase.
Post Workshop
After workshops Beneficiaries are assisted to design projects of their choices, addressing issues or complimenting achievements in their communities. They are given access to tools and mentorship to carry out their projects.
To celebrate the completion fo the program, an exhibition is organized in their home community and partnering venues.

HerStory Cohort 1 Exhibition at UGHE campus
One of the main deliverables of the first cohort of the project was an exhibition that would portray Butaro sector through the eyes (or rather cameras) of these young photographers. After 3 months of project development and mentorship, an exhibition of the young women’s photo projects was exhibited at the University of Global Health Equity, in Butaro with presence of their parents, friends and siblings.
HerStory Cohort 1 Community street exhibition
An outdoor street exhibition was presented to the general public. It was an amazing experience for everyone displaying their works in the streets of Butaro town.
The participants of HerStory were able to present their work right in their home area, to their neighbors, fellows, people they grew up with.
Photography isn’t quite common here, so it was a unique experience to see people from Butaro appreciating the beauty of stories taken from their home area, by their own children, friends, colleagues who are part of HerStory project.
